The world of libraries is changing faster than ever before. Artificial intelligence. Smart technologies. Global digital networks. These are no longer futuristic concepts—they are the reality of modern librarianship.

But here is the question every forward-thinking library must ask: Are we ready?

From February 17 to 19, 2026, the John Harris Library is taking a bold step into the future. We are proud to host a transformative 3-day training programme designed specifically for library staff. The topic? “Smart Technologies, Skilled Librarians & Global Visibility in the 5th Industrial Revolution.”

This is not just another workshop. This is an opportunity to equip ourselves with the skills, knowledge, and vision needed to lead in a new era.

The 5th Industrial Revolution is here. It is characterized by a partnership between humans and smart technologies, artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, robotics, and beyond. For libraries, this presents both exciting possibilities and urgent challenges.

How do we integrate smart technologies into our daily services? How do we ensure our librarians remain skilled and relevant? How do we increase our global visibility so that John Harris Library is recognized not just in Benin City, but around the world?

This training programme has been carefully designed to answer these questions.

His work focuses on bridging the gap between traditional library services and the demands of the digital age.

What Participants Will Gain

Over three intensive days, library staff will explore:

  • The defining characteristics of the 5th Industrial Revolution and what it means for libraries
  • Practical applications of smart technologies in library operations
  • Strategies for developing and maintaining relevant digital skills
  • Approaches to increasing your library’s global visibility and impact
  • Case studies and best practices from leading institutions

This is a hands-on, interactive programme designed to leave participants with actionable knowledge they can apply immediately.

At John Harris Library, we are committed to meeting international standards and providing a diverse array of educational resources and modern services for our community. That commitment begins with our greatest asset: our people.

When our librarians are skilled, confident, and forward-thinking, every patron benefits. Every research question is answered more effectively. Every resource is utilized more fully. Every interaction becomes an opportunity for excellence.

This training programme represents an investment in our staff, and therefore, an investment in every student, faculty member, and researcher who walks through our doors.

We look forward to three days of learning, growth, and transformation. Together, we will ensure that John Harris Library not only keeps pace with the 5th Industrial Revolution, but helps lead the way.
